String Quartet Glasgow | We understand that every wedding is different…

Over the years we have played in ruined castles, on beaches, in grand halls and in people’s kitchens, so we appreciate the need to remain flexible and fit in with your arrangements.

Typically we would begin playing about 30 minutes before ‘kick-off’ as your guests start arriving at the venue. Then we would play throughout the ceremony, for the processional, recessional, signing of the marriage schedule, and to accompany hymns or play any religious music if required. Clients often like us to continue playing through their drinks reception to entertain guests while the wedding party is having photos taken.

We can also draw on our experience to suggest suitable repertoire to create the right ambience at each different stage of your wedding, whether that be light baroque pieces before a ceremony, or some more contemporary numbers during a champagne reception. If you do not see your particular choice of music on our repertoire list, we will happily arrange it for you.

Gisela Hans was born in Cape Town, South Africa where she started playing the violin at the tender age of 4 yrs. Throughout her schooling, her violin playing flourished, and she quickly developed a distinctive flair and individual playing style of her own.
Associated Board Violin Examinations were passed with no less than
Distinctions.

As a result of these grades, she was awarded a coveted Full Scholarship from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music to study at the Royal Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD) in Glasgow, graduating in 2004 With a BMus (Hons).

During her 4 years at the RSAMD, she was approached by the renowned Scottish band Belle and Sebastian, to be a session player. Subsequent tours with them took her all over the world and she has played to sell-out crowds in USA, Canada, Europe, Scandinavia, Japan and Australia. She has also played at several festivals, including Glastonbury (UK), Fuji Festival (Japan) and Benicassim (Spain). Album appearances and live studio and television recordings followed, with Gisela even landing a starring role in the music video for the single ‘Wrapped Up In Books’.

An experienced and well-travelled performer, Gisela now concentrates her talent on tutoring violin within various primary and secondary schools in the Falkirk area. As an established player within the music scene in Glasgow, Gisela frequently performs at weddings and has appeared at numerous corporate events for clients such as Gordon Ramsay, the New Labour Party and various Banks.

This highly adaptable, electrifying young violinist presents clients not only with years of practical performing experience but also a high quality of professionalism, presentation and musicianship.

David began playing the Violin at the age of 8. As his talent burgeoned throughout his childhood, he attained places with some of the best youth orchestras in Scotland including the prestigious National Youth Orchestra of Scotland (NYOS). David studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD), graduating in 2002 with a Masters degree. Whilst at the RSAMD David was awarded the Bessie Spence and Robert Highgate prizes for Violin playing. During his time at the RSAMD he was also the leader of the Academy Symphony Orchestra.

After completing his studies David went on to freelance with the Orchestra of the Scottish Opera as well as the Scottish Concert Orchestra. Over the years David has gained extensive experience of playing in string quartets, ceilidh bands, wedding bands and chamber ensembles, and his fiddling skills are always in high-demand at Burns Suppers.

David has also worked as a session musician with Scottish artists The Delgados and Aiden Moffat. Live radio sessions for John Peel and Billy Sloan followed along with album appearances and tours playing such famous venues as the Barrowlands in Glasgow and Brixton Academy in London.
David has also performed at T in the Park and many other European festivals.

A dedicated teacher as well as a talented performer David has more recently concentrated on tutoring violin to primary and secondary school pupils as well as conducting and co-ordinating various youth orchestras. An established classical player, David is also a highly adept Ceilidh musician.

A bright, confident and affable young musician, David presents clients with over 20 years of practical performing experience.

Alan

Alan fell in love with, and began playing, the cello aged 7 after hearing a performance of ‘The Swan’ played by the late Paul Tortellier.

Initially taught by Tim Sharpe, Alan showed considerable promise and rose
steadily through the ranks of the Lanarkshire Orchestral Society with whom he later performed numerous concertos as a guest soloist. He then continued his studies under Pat Hair at The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, where he was principal cello in the academy’s chamber orchestra and flagship string quartet, until he graduated in 1996.

Alan is an accomplished session cellist and keyboard player and over the years
has toured the world playing with bands including one of the most influential
figures in Glasgow’s independent music, The Delgados and the late, great
Arab Strap. He has performed at most British and European festivals, as well as many high profile concert venues including The Royal Albert Hall, Brixton Academy, and Barbican Theatre in London, The Bowery Ballroom in New York City, and Quattro in Tokyo. He has also played on no less than 50 studio albums, one of which, ‘The Great Eastern’ by the delgados, was nominated for the coveted Mercury Music Prize.

With 15 years professional experience in both performance and teaching, Alan is a well-respected and popular cellist, admired by his peers from all genres of
music.

Emily

Emily started playing the violin at the age of 5. She first performed as a soloist age 11, playing the Bach Double violin concerto with orchestra, and went on to lead and play as a soloist with various youth orchestras in Scotland. She later studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, graduating in 2005 with a Postgraduate Diploma in Performance, with Distinction.

She has a love of all genres of music.

In folk music, she has her own ceilidh band Blaze in the Bothy, and has played
with the Porridge Men, headlining Tartan Week in New York as well as playing regularly around Scotland and further afield including Abu Dhabi, Florence, and the Festival of Carbajo in Spain. For the past two years, Blaze in the Bothy have played on the main stage of the Hoog at the Assembly Rooms and the Hoog Royale at the Queen’s Hall, part of the Edinburgh Hogmanay festivities.

In pop music, Emily has toured and recorded with The Delgados, and recorded with Sharleen Spiteri and Isobel Campbell. She has performed live at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange with hip hop legend Kanye West, and at the Glasgow SECC with Smokey Robinson.

Emily has freelanced as a classical musician with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. She now works full time with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in the 1st violin section and enjoys an exciting and varied programme of performing, recording and international touring.

She has over 10 year’s experience of providing and
arranging live music for weddings and corporate events, guaranteeing a friendly
and professional service.

The Apollo String Quartet has been playing at corporate functions for many years and can add that little something extra to your event…

Our wide range of repertoire will easily suit the needs of any function, corporate evening and large graduation balls to smaller more intimate parties. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any requests if you have a specific piece of music in mind that we do not have listed as special requests can also be arranged with enough forward notice.

For larger events…
We will provide a PA system to help create a beautiful ambience for you and your guests throughout your special occasion.
For smaller events…
Some venues might be more suited to a trio than a quartet. The string trio consists of two violins and a cello. We have played at many small functions and intimate weddings as a trio and our music will always be of the highest
quality.
