Violin

Emily MacphersonEmily started playing the violin at the age of 5. She first performed as a soloist age 11, playing the Bach Double violin concerto with orchestra, and went on to lead and play as a soloist with various youth orchestras in Scotland. She later studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, graduating with a Postgraduate Diploma in Performance, with Distinction.

She has a love of all genres of music. In folk music, she has her own ceilidh band Blaze in the Bothy, and has played with the Porridge Men, headlining Tartan Week in New York as well as playing regularly around Scotland and further afield including Abu Dhabi, Florence, and the Festival of Carbajo in Spain. For the past two years, Blaze in the Bothy have played on the main stage of the Hoog at the Assembly Rooms and the Hoog Royale at the Queen’s Hall, part of the Edinburgh Hogmanay festivities.

In pop music, Emily has toured and recorded with The Delgados, and recorded with Sharleen Spiteri and Isobel Campbell. She has performed live at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange with hip hop legend Kanye West, and at the Glasgow SECC with Smokey Robinson.

Emily has freelanced as a classical musician with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. She now works full time with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in the 1st violin section and enjoys an exciting and varied programme of performing, recording and international touring.

Possibly one of the nicest people you could possibly meet, Emily is a joy to have around as well as being a spectacularly good violinist!
