Seonaid Aitken
Seonaid is a versatile award-winning violinist from Fife. She attended the junior department of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow then moved to London to study for her Bachelor of Music Honours degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She played in the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and went on to lead their semi-professional orchestra Camerata Scotland performing in the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Royal Albert Hall and Buckingham Palace.
After graduating she toured the world with dancing fiddle show Barrage, completed a residency in Las Vegas playing for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and lived in Japan while performing at the Tokyo Disney Resort.
Now based in Glasgow, Seonaid plays with the Orchestra of the Scottish Opera and records and tours with Scottish folk singer (and Idlewild front man) Roddy Woomble, gypsy jazz band Rose Room, Western Swing band Stretch Dawrson and the Mending Hearts and, as a special guest, with Edinburgh-based jazz band Swing 2013.
She is much in demand as a session recording artist in Scotland having recently recorded for composer Jim Sutherland’s ‘Struileag’ project, the Treacherous Orchestra and Colin MacIntyre (Mull Historical Society).
Seonaid also played in the Proclaimers’ musical ‘Sunshine on Leith’ and regularly plays Scottish fiddle for the Hogmanay celebrations at Gleneagles Hotel. As a headline entertainer, Seonaid performs her show onboard Princess and Celebrity Cruises and has recently orchestrated the music for the National Theatre of Scotland play ‘Dragon’. She can also be seen playing Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture in Fingal’s Cave on BBC2’s ‘Coast’.
